About the Centre
The Spinal Cord Injuries Unit (SCIU) in Belfast is a 15 bed regional unit situated in Musgrave Park Hospital (MPH) providing rehabilitation to the whole of Northern Ireland. We cover a population of 1.7 million and offer a service to people with non-progressive Spinal cord injury or disease and Guillian Barre syndrome. We have close links with our colleagues in Trauma and Orthopaedics, Neurosurgery, Neurology and ICU. Weekly ward rounds from SCIU take place in the Royal Victoria Hospital (RVH) Belfast which is the trauma centre where new referrals are picked up.
We have the full range of standard SCI therapies available to patients in MPH which is a green field site situated in South Belfast approx 2 miles from the RVH.
Patients have access to urodynamics and a continence service, a full range of radiology services including CT and MRI on-site, state of the art physiotherapy facilities in the Mitre Rehabilitation Unit which includes a 25m hydrotherapy pool and body support walking system . In addition the Regional wheelchair service is based in MPH and we have easy access for our patients to specialised seating clinics via Occupational therapy (OT).
We have a dedicated team in SCIU including nursing, physio, OT, Social work, psychology, dietetics and Art therapy. We have access to voluntary services including complimentary therapies.
There is currently 1 WTE Consultant in rehabilitation and 1 WTE Staff grade doctor based in the unit with Rehabilitation Medicine trainees rotating through the unit.
