About the Centre
26 bed Unit for the treatment of spinal cord injury patients in South and Mid Wales, also neighbouring Gloucestershire.
At present 80% of our patients live within an hour’s drive of the Spinal Injuries Unit.
We have developed a multi-disciplinary in-reach model to prevent complications and improve outcomes at the University Hospital of Wales in the acute phase of spinal injury.
Plans are underway to relocate the Unit to the University Hospital Llandough by early 2014 with more modern facilities and provision of ventilatory beds.
The Unit is a part of the Neurosciences Directorate and also aids in the rehabilitation of complex non-traumatic spinal cord injuries or with similar presentations.
The Unit works closely with the community Pressure Ulcer Prevention Team (PUPIS) managing most pressure sores in the community based at Morriston Hospital, Swansea.
This team is very well supported by the Thousand Lives Plus Campaign to prevent unnecessary morbidity in patients prone to pressure sores.
